Boston for Thanksgiving Weekend 2026: Markets, Lights and a Long-Weekend Plan
Boston, Vereinigte Staaten

A 52-foot spruce stands lit on Seaport Common at Snowport Holiday Market, and the one day the market closes all season is Thanksgiving. The blue trellis at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park goes on at 5 p.m. on 23 November and stays lit all winter. Mass Hort Festival of Trees at The Garden at Elm Bank (Wellesley) opens on 25 November.

Snowport on Seaport Common

Rows of white A-frame timber chalets run across the Common under a canopy of warm string lights, with the glass Seaport towers and the harbour water behind them. More than 130 independent traders hold the stalls, and 17 of them sell food. Four themed bars sit among the chalets.

The market trades from 6 November to 27 December 2026, and Christmas Day is its only other closure. Entry is free, there is no door policy, and a party of any size walks in.

On weekends a Fast Pass buys a timed entry slot, $15 for an adult and $7 for a child. It only pays for itself once the queue has built. Start the long weekend here on the Friday, since the market is dark on Thanksgiving itself and the lights come on over the chalets at dusk.

The SoWa Christmas Market

Hanging filament bulbs light the maker stalls inside an 1890s red-brick power station, under exposed riveted steel roof trusses and tall arched industrial windows. More than 100 regional makers sell across the floor, which is large enough that a group spreads out without planning.

Entry is $10 at the door and children under 12 are free. The market runs from 20 November to 27 December, so it covers the whole Thanksgiving weekend.

The name is new for 2026. This is the 11th edition of what Boston knew for years as the SoWa Winter Festival, now the SoWa Christmas Market, and old listings still carry the old name. Hold this one back for the afternoon it rains. It is the warmest indoor market in the city and the one stop on the weekend the weather cannot spoil.

Free lights around the harbour

Fifty thousand blue lights sheathe 260 feet of curving, wisteria-covered trellis at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, with 13 more trees lit around it, North End brick on one side and moored harbour boats on the other. The 24th annual lighting falls on Monday 23 November 2026, with free eggnog, hot chocolate and chowder handed out that night. The park stays open and the lights cost nothing to stand under for the rest of the winter.

Faneuil Hall is a two-minute walk away, which gives you two free stops in a row. The Faneuil Hall Marketplace Holiday Tree Lighting raises a 30-foot Norway spruce on the cobbled plaza between granite-columned Faneuil Hall and the domed colonnade of Quincy Market, with lit garlands along the arcades.

That ceremony runs on Saturday 21 November 2026 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the tree is lit at 6 p.m. sharp. The décor stays up through the season, so a Thanksgiving-weekend visitor still gets the plaza and the arcades lit. Nobody has confirmed the old Blink! light-and-sound show for 2026, so distrust any listing that promises it.

Boston Common Frog Pond is an oval rink sunk into Boston Common, skaters circling under floodlights, with a warming hut and skate-hire window to one side and the gold State House dome over bare trees. The Skating Club of Boston runs it, and you pay admission plus skate hire.

In early November the 2026-27 opening date and prices were still unpublished. Check both before you build an afternoon around a skate.

Light displays worth the drive

Open firepits with s'mores burn in an Italianate walled garden threaded with lights at the Festival of Trees, and indoors dozens of individually decorated trees stand around HO- and O-scale model trains winding through a miniature snow village. The 18th edition runs from 25 November to 28 December 2026, 25 minutes west of the city.

Tickets are timed entry at $24 to $29 for adults and $8 to $10 for children. There are no group discounts, because the display is the charity's main fundraiser. Slots sell out, so book as soon as you fix the dates of the trip.

Night Lights Fantastical Forest at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill drapes more than half a million rainbow-coloured lights across a 200-acre hillside garden. You walk through tunnels of lit lollipop-shaped trees, past a glowing glasshouse orangerie, with the Wachusett hills dark beyond.

It opens nightly from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, under an hour from Boston. Tickets are timed entry at $$, and members take 25 percent off. This is the biggest light trail in the region, and the one display to drive out to over the weekend.

ZooLights at Stone Zoo, Boston
ZooLights at Stone Zoo, Boston

ZooLights at Stone Zoo strings thousands of lights along tree-lined paths, with live reindeer in a lit paddock, a glowing carousel, and the Yukon Creek section dressed as a candy-themed winter wonderland around a running model train. It opens 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with last entry at 8:30 p.m. Pricing is dynamic at $$, and the earlier you book the cheaper the slot.

The group rate of $12 per person for parties of 20 or more needs two weeks' notice and prepayment, and it is excluded on Saturdays and across Thanksgiving weekend. A party of 20 pays full price this particular weekend. For value against the other lights near the city it still wins, and the reindeer are here and nowhere else.

The Enchanted Village at Jordan's Furniture (Avon) sets 59 hand-painted mechanical figurines into 18 glass-fronted Victorian street vignettes from 1958, bakers and skaters and toymakers jerking through their loops inside a cavernous furniture showroom. It is free and unticketed, open from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, and coach groups are welcome.

Santa photos run 13 November to 24 December. The laser show, the indoor rink and the tube slide cost extra. Boston grew up with this display, a department-store relic of the 1950s, and it is the one stop on the list that costs nothing and takes 20 minutes.

Staying on into December

Boston Common Tree Lighting raises a huge Nova Scotia white spruce beside the Tremont Street visitor centre and lights it at dusk, the gold State House dome on Beacon Hill rising behind the trees, the crowd packed onto bare winter grass. Nova Scotia sends the tree every year as a thank-you for Boston's help after the 1917 Halifax explosion.

The ceremony is Thursday 3 December 2026, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is free, with no tickets and no limits, and you need to arrive early for a sightline. The Commonwealth Avenue Mall lights follow at 8 p.m. Of everything in the season, this is the ceremony worth moving a trip to catch.

Old Town Trolley Tours Boston — Holiday Sights & Festive Nights, Boston
Old Town Trolley Tours Boston — Holiday Sights & Festive Nights, Boston

Old Town Trolley Tours Boston runs its Holiday Sights and Festive Nights route from 4 to 30 December 2026, with no tour on Christmas Day. The trolley is open-sided, heated and lit, with a costumed period guide at the front, hot drinks on board and 75 minutes of gaslamps and lit bow-front windows along Beacon Hill's Charles Street. Seats are $44.65 for adults and $17.10 for children. Reservations are required and space is limited.

Classic Harbor Line Boston sails from 60 Rowes Wharf through December 2026 on the Northern Lights, a 1920s-style motor yacht with mahogany trim and a glass-walled heated salon hung with garlands. Rowes Wharf's great brick archway frames the departure and the lit skyline sits across black water. Fares are $72 to $93 per person.

They sell several formats, cocoa-and-carols, brunch with Santa and sunset. Pick one. It is the same boat. Capacity is small, so book ahead, and full private charters go through 617-951-2460.

The December market weekends

Harvard Square Holiday Fair packs white canopy stalls onto the brick plaza at the corner of JFK and Winthrop Streets, Harvard's red brick and the square's newsstand kiosk framing it, bare plane trees strung with lights. Entry is free and the whole fair is open-air. The aisles are tight, and a big group should split up at the entrance.

It takes two weekends only, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20 December 2026. The fair has run since 1986 and reads Cambridge-local rather than Seaport-polished.

Cultural Survival Bazaar at the Cyclorama fills an 1884 circular domed rotunda lit through a central oculus skylight, textile and silverwork stalls arranged in a ring under the dome, dancers performing in the middle of the floor. Indigenous artists from around the world sell at this winter-solstice market, with live music and dance, on 12 and 13 December 2026.

A $10 donation is suggested and under-18s are free. A day-one ticket brings a friend in free on day two. For a visitor who has had enough of baubles, this is the most interesting room in the city.

Before you go

Snowport closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, the SoWa floor opens from 20 November, and Frog Pond's season dates were still unpublished in early November. Book the Festival of Trees, Night Lights, ZooLights, the trolley and the harbour sailings in advance, and leave the free ceremonies and the waterfront trellis unticketed in the plan.

See the Boston guide and the Boston hotel search.
